All seedlings offered below have been produced by crossing exhibition quality AM, AD or HCC quality or awarded parent plants which would all lie within the top 2 -5% of plants known in cultivation
These orchids are very robust and happily tolerate from 2oC to 47oC and low to high humidity. Flowering time is generally late winter peaking in spring with some flowering as late as early summer.
Availability of flasks always subject to prior sales. Small orders may be able to be filled immediately but if required to be replated ‘to order’ may typically take 3-5 months to grow large enough to be ready to ship.
WESTERN ORCHID LABS “speciosum” crossings aim to provide top quality seedlings from well chosen ‘intra-specific’ and / or ‘interspecific’ crossings to combine the best possible features to produce seedlings that are as good as or better than the parents used.
Parent plants used have been selected to meet our requirements for performance features such as flower segment size, lip characteristics, number of spikes per flowering; spike length, stance, flower count and arrangement; flowering frequency and reliability, flower spike habit; intensity and clarity of flower colour and natural charm and appeal overall. All parent plants are naturally good growers and robust. Well grown plants are very attractive in appearance even when not in flower.
$40.00 per maxi flask of 25 plants & $25.00 per mini flask of 12 plants – orders of over 15 maxi flasks - $37.50 per flask.
All speciosum seedlings are grown in 750mL, wide mouth glass jars that are initially filled with a significant volume of the world’s best tissue culture medium to assure the seedlings are of the very best quality. In this way the seedlings will be up to 10 – 14cm tall and have several luxuriant, leafy canes and extensive root systems. We aim to guarantee customer satisfaction. We then do not sell seedlings until they are strong and ready to defask.
COMMERCIAL QUANTITIES – P.O.A. for orders of over 10,000 plants in flasks. Quotations remain valid for 60 days.
COMMERCIAL QUANTITY SALES CONDITIONS :-
1. Initial 1/3 deposit must be made by customer to confirm order and secure mother flasks sufficient to provide for customer order to be filled.
2. An additional 1/3 payment will later be required when our laboratory commences to replate final flasks to meet customer order.
3. When seedlings are ready, the final 1/3 of the overall cost of flasks + Phytosanitary certificate + freight costs etc, to be paid in full by customer. We then send flasks.
Please note that the genus ‘speciosum’ has at various times been split by Botanists into some sub genera. We recognise Den speciosum var, grandiflorum; var. pedunculatum; var. speciosum; var. hillii but a more recent reclassification by botanists now describes them as Den speciosum, den curvicaule, den capricornicum, den pedunculatum, den tarberi. All parent plants in crosses listed below are effectively plants that fit the original description ‘Dendrobium speciosum’.
FLASK LIST Note almost exclusively ‘maxi’ flasks – no commercials & there may be the odd mini flask
Lab Number Crossing & Description
[ J391A to K684 may be limited in numbers due to previous sales ] J391A Den speciosum var grandiflorum [ “Bunya’ x ‘Gracious Cascade’ ]
K264A Den speciosum ‘Pacific#5’ x ‘Lute’. A bolt upright spike of delightful lime green flowers crossed with an intense gold – should be really good.
K266 Den speciosum var curvicaule ‘DM’ x speciosum ‘Pacific#5’
K599 Dendrobium [ capricornicum x curvicaule ] x speciosum ‘Windermere’. This is an ‘intervarietal’ cross. Here we have 75% curvicaule & 25% capricornicum genes. We expect quite large flowers; cream to yellow; long flower spikes, lots of flowers, rapid growers and very showy.
K820 Dendrobium speciosum var. pedunculatum ‘Olivia’ x Den speciosum var. capricornicum ‘Yepoon’. ‘Olivia’ is almost certainly the nicest flowering pedunculatum I have ever seen. The plant is compact as typical of this variety with a good, erect spike and lots of showy, shapely flowers with beautiful, attractively marked lips. “Yepoon’ is a very compact bulbed form of capricornicum and our hope is that we will get very compact plats that still produce a quality, capricornicum-like flower spike with good yellow to cream colouring and the showy, shapely flower characteristics of ‘Olivia’. I have seen from other similar crossings that this is quite likely to be so.
K931 Den speciosum var. grandiflorum ‘Robyn’ x var. capricornicum ‘Raelene’ Guaranteed intense yellows and a few golds. Good flower size and lots of them an long arching spikes that look like bottle brushes. Very vigorous plants.
K944 Den speciosum var. capricornicum ‘Vicki’ x ‘Raelene’ Again a cross guaranteed to produce seedling to flower in strong yellows to golds. Both parents are spectacular show winners so we have high expectations for very showy offspring.
K949 Den [ capricornicum x curvicaule ] x capricornicum ‘Raelene’ Another very much intervarietal crossing so we expect vigorous plantsand again as both arents have been regular show winners we expect great offspring here also.
K932 Den speciosum var. grandiflorum [ ‘Robyn’ x {Mt Larcom ‘Gold’ x self}] Two ripper grandiflorums crossed here so we know this crossing just can not fail to produce a host of great seedlings with some even grander than the parent plats. Expect brilliant gold flowers with large segments and bold well marked lips. Massive germination of seed so lots available.
K942 Den speciosum var. grandiflorum [ ‘NG’ x ‘Robyn’ ] Just like K932 above these parents are absolute rippers so expect strong yellows and golds on long spikes just covered with flowers. Massive germination so lots available.
K945 Den speciosum var. capricornicum [ ‘Mat’ x ‘Vicki’ ] “Mat’ is a highly sought after plant as it is always a contender for top prizes on the exhibition bench. ‘Vicki’ is likewise a great show plant but with deeper colour. Expect lots of show bench winers out of these also. Massive germination so heaps of these will be available.
K947 Den speciosum var. speciosum ‘Brindle Creek’x var. grandiflorum ‘Robyn’, This is an interspecific cross between 2 speciosum varieties. Brindle creek has fantastic flower shape, flower count and spike habit. Combined with the intense yellow-gold coloured ‘Robyn’ we reckon on producing bigger flowers, brighter flowers and lots of them on big, long spikes and plants of real substance that will really grow well. Probably shiny cream to yellow flowers. Lots of gthese available.
K948 Den speciosum var. curvicaule ‘Windermere’ x var. grandiflorum ‘Robyn’. This is another interspecific crossing. ‘Windermere’ is one of the most popular ‘speciosum’ type parents used and little wonder in that it is a real performer as an exhibition plant and show winner. Coupled here with ‘Robyn’ I think we can say that quality, floriferous seedlings in the cream to gold tones with high appeal are almost a certainty. Massive germination so lots of these available.
K950 Den speciosum var. grandiflorum ‘Robyn’ x var. pedunculatum ‘Olivia’. Another interspecific cross. I reckon we will see really fantastic, full-shaped flowers in light yellow to near gold with magnificently marked, broad lips. From experience we knopw plants will be compact in nature and make excellent po t plant specimens. Massive germination so lots will be available.
K967 Den speciosum var. curvicaule [ ‘Windermere’ x ‘Palmerston’ ] x var. speciosum ‘Winston’. This is another ‘intervarietal’ crossing. ‘Windermere’ and ‘Palmerston’ are 2 of the most respected curvicaules and the parent plant combines the best of both parents. The pollen parent has some of the biggest, meatiest, glossy, yellow flowers of any var. speciosum so we are hoping for these to produce extremely high flower count on plants capable of high flower spike count and largely glossy rich creams to strong yellows and very appealing.
K958 Den speciosum var. speciosum [ ‘Mimosa’ x ‘$15’ ] Here we have two of the best, crystalline white flowered specioums crossed together to make a heap of quality white flowering seedlings. Expect lots of spikes with flowers of good size and fullness arranged on strong, long spikes so that they look like shiny white bottle brushes. Many already sold but some left.
L025 Den speciosum curvicaule ‘Uncle Pat’ x var. capricornicum ‘Raelene’ Again an intervarietal crossing so we are used to getting plant vigor in this sort of cross and again both parents are spectacular show winners so I reckon we will have a heap of spectacular seedlings again yellows to golds.
